Chateaugay (pronounced SHAT-ə-gay) is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. The town's name comes from a place in France.

As of the 2020 census, about 1,743 people lived in Chateaugay. This number was a bit lower than in 2010. Inside the town, there is also a smaller area called the Village of Chateaugay. The town is located in the very northeastern part of Franklin County.

History of Chateaugay

The first people settled in the Chateaugay area in 1796. The town itself was officially created in 1799. This was even before Franklin County was formed!

How Chateaugay Grew and Changed

Chateaugay was originally much larger. It was made from parts of the towns of Champlain and Plattsburgh. By 1802, Chateaugay covered most of what is now Franklin County. Over time, parts of Chateaugay were used to create other towns.

  • The town of Malone was formed from Chateaugay in 1805.
  • When Franklin County was created, a small part of Chateaugay stayed in Clinton County.
  • Later, other towns like St. Armand (1822), Bellmont (1833), Franklin (1834), and Burke (1844) were also formed from Chateaugay's original land.

Famous People and Events

Chateaugay was the hometown of Orville H. Gibson. He was a very important person who started the Gibson Guitar Corporation in 1902. This company makes famous guitars!

In 1856, a powerful tornado hit the town. It destroyed more than 100 buildings. In 1868, the main community in the center of the town became an official village.

Since 1934, a company called McCadam Cheese Cooperative has been making cheddar cheese in Chateaugay. They started making cheese way back in 1876.

The Chateaugay–Herdman Border Crossing is a special building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This means it's an important historical site.

Geography of Chateaugay

Chateaugay is a town with a total area of about 129 square kilometers (49.8 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.03 square kilometers, is water.

Location and Borders

The northern edge of the town is the international border with Canada (specifically, the province of Quebec). The eastern edge of the town borders Clinton County.

Roads and Rivers

U.S. Route 11 is a major highway that runs east to west through the middle of the town. New York State Route 374 is another highway that goes north to south. These two roads meet in the Village of Chateaugay.

The Chateaugay River flows through the town. It starts at Lower Chateaugay Lake and flows north. This river eventually joins the Saint Lawrence River.
