Allium burlewii is a type of wild onion often called Burlew's onion. This special plant grows only in California. It likes to live in rocky soils found in the central and southern mountains of the state. You can find it in places like Riverside, San Bernardino, Fresno, and Monterey Counties. It usually grows high up, between 6,000 and 10,000 feet above sea level.

What is Burlew's Onion?

Burlew's onion is a small plant. It grows from an oval-shaped bulb, which is like a small underground storage part. Its stem is usually short, rarely growing taller than 20 centimeters (about 8 inches).

What Does It Look Like?

This onion plant has one long, pointed leaf that can grow up to 35 centimeters (about 14 inches) long. Its flowers are quite pretty! They grow in a cluster called an inflorescence. You can find up to 20 dark-veined purple flowers in each cluster. Each flower is about a centimeter long and has dark purple parts called anthers.
