The name Burpengary comes from an Aboriginal word. Burpengar means "place of the green wattle". This shows the area's original natural environment.

When Europeans first settled here in the 1870s, they mainly cut timber. Burpengary started as a stop for trucks. This was because of its good location on the road to the Sunshine Coast.
