Burt Lake is a beautiful and large lake located in Cheboygan County, Michigan, in the United States. It's a popular spot for many activities and is known for its clear waters. The western side of the lake also touches Emmet County.

Discovering Burt Lake
Burt Lake covers a huge area of about 17,120 acres (69 square kilometers). It was named after William Austin Burt, who helped survey the area between 1840 and 1843. He worked with John Mullett to map out this part of Michigan.
How Big is Burt Lake?
This impressive lake is about 10 miles (16 km) long from north to south. At its widest point, it stretches about 5 miles (8 km) across. The deepest part of Burt Lake goes down to 73 feet (22 meters).
Several rivers flow into Burt Lake:
- The Maple River connects it to nearby Douglas Lake.
- The Crooked River links Burt Lake with Crooked Lake.
- The Sturgeon River also flows into the lake.
The Indian River flows out of Burt Lake, leading to another large lake called Mullett Lake.
The Inland Waterway Adventure
Burt Lake is an important part of Michigan's Inland Waterway. This special waterway allows boats to travel a long distance across the northern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. You can boat all the way from Crooked Lake, which is near Petoskey on Lake Michigan, to Cheboygan on Lake Huron. It's a fantastic way to explore the region by water!
Amazing Lake Sturgeon
Burt Lake, along with Mullett Lake and Black Lake, is famous for its population of Lake Sturgeon. These are very large and ancient fish. A sturgeon caught in this area once held the record for the largest sturgeon ever caught in the USA!
Fun Things to Do Around Burt Lake
There are many exciting places to visit around Burt Lake:
- YMCA Camp Al-Gon-Quian: This popular camp is located on the southern shore of the lake.
- Burt Lake State Park: Also on the southern shore, this park offers great opportunities for camping, swimming, and enjoying the lake.
- Burt Lake Community: The small community of Burt Lake is found on the southwest shore, along M-68.
- Indian River: The town of Indian River is near the south end of the lake. Interstate 75 passes to the east of the lake, with exits close to Indian River.
