A Look Back: Buttwil's History
Buttwil was first mentioned in official records in 1160. Back then, it was called Butwile.
Early Land Ownership
From the very beginning, a group of monks called the Benedictines, from Muri Abbey, owned a lot of land in the village.
Changes in Power
In 1415, the Habsburg family lost control of the Aargau region. The right to make major legal decisions, known as the "high court" right, then went to the Swiss Confederation. However, the Abbey kept the right to handle smaller local legal matters, called the "low court" right.
Village Chapel
A special chapel, dedicated to St. James, was built in 1666. It was a smaller church that helped people in the Muri parish attend services closer to home.
Population Growth and Transport
Buttwil used to be mainly a farming village. Around 1950, its population started to shrink. But after 1970, many more people moved in. This was because the area often has clear skies, and it's easy to travel by train to big cities like Zürich and Lucerne. Since 1984, a bus service has connected Buttwil to Muri.
