In the past, the taxes from the village were shared. They went to Einsiedeln Abbey, a monastery, and a hospital in Bremgarten. For over 200 years, from 1200 to 1412, the village was owned by the Lords of Heidegg. It was even used to pay a ransom once!

Until 1799, Bettwil was part of a larger church area. Then, it became its own independent church community. An old chapel, built in 1496, was replaced by the Church of St. Joseph in 1789.
