History of Kallern
Kallern was first mentioned in old records around the years 1303-1308. Back then, it was known as Kaltherren. During the Late Middle Ages, two important landowners in Kallern were Muri Abbey and Hilfikon.
After 1415, the village became part of Muri. Later, after 1435, it belonged to the district of Boswil in an area called the Freie Ämter. During the time of the Helvetic Republic, Kallern was part of the Canton of Baden.
Kallern, along with Ober- and Unterhöll and Uezwil, used to be one big community. Niesenberg was connected to Bettwil. In 1803, a special law called the Act of Mediation helped create the community we know today.
In more recent times, Kallern has seen many improvements. A chapel was built in Oberniesenberg in 1962. A school and a multi-purpose room were finished in 1975, giving kids a place to learn and the community a place to gather. Electric street lights came to the village in 1969, and a central water supply was added in 1970.
In 1980, a new living area called Hinterbühl was developed. By 1984, it was connected to a sewage treatment plant. Around the year 2000, about a quarter of the working people in Kallern worked in farming. Two-thirds of the workers traveled to other towns for their jobs. At the start of the 21st century, Kallern did not have public transportation or many shops.
Most of Kallern, except for a small area called Oberniesenberg, belongs to the church community of Boswil-Kellern.
