Bwlch y Ddwyallt is a special place in the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons in south Wales. It's often used to describe the highest point of a flat, high area called Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion. This spot is actually part of a bigger mountain called Waun Rydd.

The highest part of this flat area is 754 meters (about 2,474 feet) above sea level. It sits on the northern edge, looking over a valley called Cwm Cwareli. The name "Bwlch" is a bit unusual for a peak. In Welsh, 'bwlch' usually means a gap or a pass between mountains.

What is Bwlch y Ddwyallt Made Of?

The flat top of Bwlch y Ddwyallt is made from very strong rocks. These rocks are called the Plateau Beds Formation. They are a type of sandstone from the Old Red Sandstone group. These rocks were formed a very long time ago, during the Devonian period. This was a time when many fish lived in the oceans.

Below these top rocks are more sandstones. These are called the Brownstones Formation. They are also from the Devonian period and make up most of the hill. If you look at the cliffs around Bwlch y Ddwyallt, you can see signs of ice. Huge glaciers moved across this area during the ice ages. You can also see these signs on the cliffs below Graig Fan Las, which is on the eastern side of the plateau.
