Waun Rydd is a mountain located in the amazing Brecon Beacons National Park in southern Powys, Wales. It stands tall at 769 meters (about 2,523 feet). This mountain is famous for its wide, flat top, which is quite boggy. It rises up to the east of Pen y Fan, which is another well-known peak nearby.
About Waun Rydd
This mountain is an important part of the beautiful Brecon Beacons mountain range. Its name, "Waun Rydd," comes from the Welsh language. It means "free" or "open bog," which perfectly describes its flat, sometimes wet, summit.
What Does Waun Rydd Look Like?
Waun Rydd has a unique shape, like a large, flat table with steep edges. These edges are called "rims."
- To the northeast, you'll find a steep edge called Craig Pwllfa. It looks down over a valley known as Cwm Banw.
- Craig y Fan is another edge that faces east, looking over Cwm Tarthwynni.
- To the south, there's an edge called Cwar y Gigfran. This name means 'quarry of the crow' in English. It marks the top of a large area where the land has slipped down towards the Blaen y Glyn stream below.
Ridges and Nearby Hills
Several long, narrow hills, called ridges, stretch out from Waun Rydd's flat top.
- One ridge, called Gist Wen, goes north-northeast to a smaller hill named Bryn. Bryn is 561 meters above sea level.
- Other short ridges, Cefn Bach and Cefn Edmwnt, run towards the northeast.
- Twyn Du is a ridge that extends eastwards, heading towards the Talybont Reservoir.
- Another ridge goes southeast to a smaller peak called Allt Lwyd, which is 654 meters high.
- To the south, a wide ridge leads to a dip in the land, beyond which is the top of Allt Forgan, at 513 meters.
