Cần Thơ, also called Can Tho, is the fourth-largest city in Vietnam. It is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta region.

Cần Thơ is famous for its floating markets, where people buy and sell goods on boats. It also has villages where rice paper is made and many pretty rural canals. About 1.5 million people live here as of 2024. The city is on the south bank of the Hậu River, which is a branch of the Mekong River.

In 2007, the Cần Thơ Bridge collapsed, which was a very sad event for Vietnam. Later, in 2011, the Cần Thơ International Airport opened, making it easier to travel to the city.

Cần Thơ is known as the "Western Metropolis" (Tây Đô). It is about 169 kilometers (105 miles) away from Hồ Chí Minh City.

History of Cần Thơ

During the Vietnam War, Cần Thơ was an important military center. It was the main base for a part of the South Vietnamese army. This army division helped protect the city and nearby areas.

Before 1975, Cần Thơ was part of a province called Phong Dinh. The army units in this area were involved in important actions to keep the region safe.

How Cần Thơ is Governed

Cần Thơ is a special city in Vietnam. It is an independent municipality, which means it has the same level of importance as a province. It was created in 2004 when the old Cần Thơ Province was split into two new areas: Cần Thơ City and Hậu Giang Province.

Districts of Cần Thơ

Cần Thơ is divided into nine smaller areas called districts.

  • 5 city districts:
    • Bình Thủy
    • Cái Răng
    • Ninh Kiều
    • Ô Môn
    • Thốt Nốt
  • 4 rural districts:
    • Cờ Đỏ
    • Phong Điền
    • Thới Lai
    • Vĩnh Thạnh

These districts are further divided into smaller towns, communes, and wards. Ninh Kiều is the main district. It has the famous Ninh Kiều port and is the most populated and richest part of the city.

Cần Thơ shares its borders with several other provinces. These include An Giang, Hậu Giang, Kiên Giang, Vĩnh Long, and Đồng Tháp.
