Cable News Network (CNN) is a major news organization. It shares news in many ways, like on TV, its website, and social media. CNN's main offices are in Atlanta, Georgia, and New York City.

It started in 1980, founded by Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld. CNN was the first TV channel to show news all day, every day, in the United States. Today, it's owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, a large media company.

As of December 2023, about 69 million homes in the United States watched CNN on TV. CNN's news programs are also shown around the world through CNN International. Viewers in over 212 countries and areas can watch it.

CNN's History

CNN first started broadcasting at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on June 1, 1980. Ted Turner introduced the channel. The first news show was hosted by David Walker and Lois Hart.

Since it began, CNN has grown a lot. It is now available on many cable and satellite TV providers. It also has websites and special channels like CNN Airport. CNN has 42 offices around the world. These include 12 in the United States and 31 in other countries. It also works with over 900 local TV stations.

What to Watch on CNN

CNN shows a variety of news programs. During the day, it mostly has continuous news updates. In the evenings, it focuses on deeper news and discussions, often about politics.

Daily Shows on CNN

CNN's morning shows include Early Start and CNN This Morning. CNN News Central is a main news block that airs for several hours during the day. It has different anchors like John Berman and Kate Bolduan.

Later in the day, you can watch shows like The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Inside Politics. In the late afternoon, The Lead with Jake Tapper is a popular show.

In the evenings, CNN has more in-depth programs. These include Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360°, and The Source with Kaitlan Collins. Late at night, CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip and Laura Coates Live are on. From midnight to 5 a.m., CNN often shows programs from CNN International.

Weekend Programs

Weekend programming on CNN starts with CNN This Morning. On Saturdays, shows like Smerconish and The Amanpour Hour are featured. Sundays often have political talk shows. These include Inside Politics, State of the Union, and Fareed Zakaria GPS.

CNN Newsroom airs for many hours on weekend afternoons. Weekend evenings are usually for factual programs. These include documentaries and special series. Examples are The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper and CNN Films presentations.

Past Shows and Series

CNN has also had many popular shows and documentary series in the past. Larry King Live was a very famous interview show for many years. CNN has produced many original series. These include historical documentary series like The Sixties and The Movies. Other popular series were Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown and United Shades of America.

In May 2024, CNN ordered an American version of the British news comedy show Have I Got News for You.

How CNN Looks on TV

CNN started broadcasting in high-definition (HD) in September 2007. This means the picture is very clear.

CNN often updates how its on-screen graphics look. These are the banners, headlines, and other visuals you see during a broadcast. They use different colors and fonts to make the news easy to read. In 2016, CNN started using a new font family called "CNN Sans" across all its platforms.

In June 2023, CNN updated its graphics again. They made some changes to the look and feel of the on-screen information. Then, in August 2023, they made more adjustments, bringing back some familiar elements like the scrolling news ticker.

On June 27, 2024, CNN hosted a major presidential debate. CNN reported that it was the most-watched program in the channel's history.

CNN Staff

Many people work at CNN to bring you the news. Leaders like Jim Walton, Jeff Zucker, and Chris Licht have served as presidents of CNN. In October 2023, Mark Thompson became the CEO of CNN.

In July 2024, CNN announced some changes to its workforce. It was cutting about 100 jobs and combining some of its newsrooms. This helps the company work more efficiently.

Other Ways to Get CNN News

CNN offers news on many platforms beyond its main TV channel.

CNN Website

CNN launched its website, CNN.com, in August 1995. It quickly became one of the most popular news websites in the world. The site provides live video streams, news stories, and special reports.

CNN.com also uses blogs and social media to share news. For example, CNN iReport allowed people to submit their own photos and videos. This was especially helpful during big news events.

Other Digital Offerings

CNN has live streaming broadcasts available to TV subscribers. It also offers RSS feeds and podcasts. CNN has popular YouTube channels, including "CNN" and "CNN-News18."
