Cadiz was started in 1803. It was built where two important roads from Pittsburgh and Washington, Pennsylvania met. This made it a good spot for people traveling west.

During the 1800s, some families in Cadiz helped people escape slavery. They were part of the Underground Railroad, a secret network that helped runaway slaves reach freedom in Canada.
Trains came to Cadiz in 1854, which helped the town grow even more. By 1880, the population had almost doubled.
At first, farming was the main industry. Later, oil and coal mining became very important. Today, Cadiz is a center for natural gas production. A large plant opened in 2012 that processes a lot of natural gas every day.
