Caimital is a community, also known as a barrio, located in the town of Guayama, Puerto Rico. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States. In 2010, about 4,124 people lived in Caimital.
A Look Back in Time
Caimital has an interesting history, just like many places in Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Becoming a U.S. Territory
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Count
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This was like an early census. They found that Caimital barrio had a population of 603 people at that time.
