Caledonia's Past: A Quick Look
Caledonia was first settled around 1797 by families who came from Scotland. In 1803, it officially became a town in New York and was first called "Southampton." Later, its name was changed to "Caledonia." The village of Caledonia itself became official in 1891.
Caledonia has strong ties with a nearby area called Mumford, even though they are in different counties. Mumford was once part of Caledonia but became its own town in 1821.
One interesting fact about Caledonia is that it is home to the oldest fish hatchery in the United States. It was built by Seth Green. A fish hatchery is a place where fish are bred and raised, often to help keep fish populations healthy in rivers and lakes.
