California's 47th congressional district is a special area in the U.S. state of California. It's like a neighborhood or region that elects one person to represent them in the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. This district is mostly around Long Beach. It also includes parts of western Orange County, like Garden Grove, Westminster, Stanton, Los Alamitos, and Cypress. Plus, it includes the beautiful Catalina Island! The person who represents this district right now is Democrat Alan Lowenthal.

How the District Votes

This district is a mix of different voting preferences. The "Cook Partisan Voting Index" (D+13) suggests it leans towards the Democratic Party. This is because a big part of the district is in Los Angeles County, especially around Long Beach, which tends to vote Democratic. However, there are also parts in western Orange County that often vote Republican. Since the Los Angeles County part has many more people, it usually means the district votes for the Democratic candidate overall.

After the district lines were redrawn, some cities in western Orange County thought about trying to change the district. They felt it was unfair to be grouped with a much larger city in a different county. However, nothing came of this idea.

Past District Shapes

From 2003 to 2013, the district covered many central suburbs of Orange County. These included cities like Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana.

After the 2010 United States Census, the district lines were redrawn again. This process is called redistricting. The district then moved west to include parts of Los Angeles County. It also added Catalina Island and San Clemente Island. The district still kept some parts of Orange County, such as Garden Grove.

In Movies and TV

California's 47th congressional district was featured in the political TV show The West Wing. In the show, there was a congressional election in this district. A Democratic challenger won, even though they had passed away. Later, a special election was held, and the Republican person who was already in office won.

However, in the show, some places in Orange County were mentioned that are not actually in the district today. For example, the city of Newport Beach was referenced. Many of these places are now in the 46th and 48th districts.
