Discovering Cypress's Past
Cypress was first called "Waterville" because it had many natural artesian wells. These wells brought water up from underground.
From Dairy City to Cypress
In 1956, the city was officially named "Dairy City." Local dairy farmers chose this name to protect their farms from new buildings. Other nearby cities like Cerritos and La Palma also started as dairy towns.
After World War II, the land became too valuable for farming. So, during the 1960s, dairy farms slowly sold their land to builders. By the 1970s, there were no dairies left in Cypress. Many farmers moved their businesses to Chino.
In 1957, people living in Dairy City voted to change its name to "Cypress." This name came from Cypress Elementary School, which was built in 1895. The school got its name from the Cypress trees planted there. These trees helped protect the school from strong seasonal winds called Santa Ana winds.
Cypress Community Festival
Since 1981, Cypress has celebrated its birthday with an annual event called the Cypress Community Festival. This festival might be the biggest one-day event of its kind in Orange County, California. It happens every year on the fourth Saturday in July at Oak Knoll Park.
