History of Callicoon
The name Callicoon comes from Dutch hunters who settled here in the 1600s. They saw many wild turkeys and called the area "Kollikoonkill". This means Wild Turkey Creek.
Besides turkeys, the area had lots of lumber. The Delaware River was a key way to transport goods. It connected Callicoon to cities on the coast. In the 1840s, the Erie Railroad built tracks through Callicoon. This linked the Great Lakes to the East Coast. Because of this important train station, the community was renamed Callicoon Depot.
In 1888, a big fire destroyed many businesses in Callicoon. The town quickly rebuilt, but it lost many old buildings. Later, cars became more popular than trains. This hurt the town's economy. The last passenger train left Callicoon in 1966.
By the late 1960s, tourism became the main industry. People came for camping and canoeing. Bed and breakfast inns also opened. The Villa Roma Resort and Conference Center brought even more visitors. In 1978, the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River was created. This helps protect the beautiful valley and the Delaware River.
