Calpella is a small community in Mendocino County, California, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area the Census Bureau uses for statistics.
The town is located right on the Russian River, about 6 miles (10 km) north of Ukiah. Its name comes from the Pomo language, Kalpela, meaning "Mussel bearer." In 2020, about 799 people lived in Calpella. It's also home to the Mendocino Redwood Company, which manages a lot of land in the county.

History of Calpella
Calpella was founded in 1858 by two men, Col. C.H. Veeder and his son-in-law, James Pettus. The town was named after Kalpela, a chief from a nearby Pomo village called Chomchadila. His name in the Northern Pomo language means "carrying mussels down."
For a while, Calpella was almost as important as Ukiah, a larger city nearby. The Calpella post office first opened in 1860. It closed and reopened a few times before settling down in 1920.
Geography and Climate
Calpella is located in the southeastern part of Mendocino County. It's about 6 miles (10 km) north of Ukiah, which is the county seat. The town is also 16 miles (26 km) south of Willits and 29 miles (47 km) northwest of Lakeport.
Land and Water
According to the United States Census Bureau, Calpella covers an area of about 2.6 square miles (6.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 99%, is land. The remaining 1% is water. The Russian River flows right through the middle of the community. Calpella also stretches eastward to the west shore of Lake Mendocino, which is a large reservoir.
Roads and Highways
Two important roads pass through Calpella. U.S. Route 101 goes through the western part of the community. California State Route 20 forms the northern edge of Calpella.

Calpella has a type of weather called a "warm-summer Mediterranean climate." This means that the summers are warm and dry, but they don't get extremely hot. The average monthly temperatures usually stay below 71.6°F (22°C).
People of Calpella
The population of Calpella has grown over the years. In 2010, there were 679 people living here. By 2020, the population had increased to 799 people. This means there are about 313 people living in each square mile.
