A Look at Camaceyes' Past
How Camaceyes Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but not a state.
Early Population Records
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 1,633 people lived in the Camaceyes barrio at that time. Over the years, the population of Camaceyes has grown quite a bit.
