History of Canada Bay
The name Canada Bay celebrates a special connection between Australia and Canada. This link goes back to a time when people in Canada wanted more control over their government.
The Canadian Rebels
In 1837 and 1838, there were some rebellions in Canada. These were called the Lower Canada Rebellion. After these events, 58 French Canadian and two Irish rebels were sent to Australia. They were brought to Sydney at the request of a local Catholic bishop.
These rebels were held at a place called Longbottom Stockade. Today, this area is known as Concord Oval. While imprisoned, they worked hard. They broke stones for building Parramatta Road and collected oyster shells. These shells were used to make lime, which is a material used in farming and building.
In 1842, the French Canadians were allowed to work outside the prison. By 1843 and 1844, almost all of them received pardons. This meant they were forgiven for their actions. Most of them returned to Canada. Only two passed away, and one, Joseph Marceau, decided to stay in Dapto.
Remembering the Past
Many places in Canada Bay remind us of this history. For example, you can find places named Exile Bay and France Bay. There are also streets named Durham Street, Marceau Drive, Polding Street, and Gipps Street. These names honor the people and events connected to the Canadian rebels.
At Bayview Park, there is a special plaque. It remembers the exiles and marks the spot where they first arrived.
Formation of the City of Canada Bay
The larger area known as the City of Canada Bay was created in December 2000. This happened when the councils of Concord and Drummoyne joined together.
