Canadian is a city in Texas, USA. It's the main town, or county seat, of Hemphill County. In 2020, about 2,339 people lived there. The city gets its name from the nearby Canadian River, which flows into the Arkansas River.

Canadian became an official city in 1908. People sometimes call it "the oasis of the High Plains" because it's a green spot in a drier area. You can find Canadian on the eastern side of the Texas Panhandle, very close to the border with Oklahoma.

History of Canadian

The city government of Canadian started in 1887.

A part of the famous Tom Hanks movie Cast Away was filmed right here in Canadian!

In February 2024, a huge wildfire called the Smokehouse Creek Fire affected much of the town. This fire burned over a million acres of land. Luckily, no one in Canadian was reported to have died because of the fire.

Where is Canadian Located?

Canadian is in the northwest part of Hemphill County. It's about 1 mile south of the Canadian River, where another stream called Red Deer Creek joins it.

Two main roads, U.S. Routes 60 and 83, go through the middle of town. Route 60 can take you northeast to Enid, Oklahoma, or southwest to Amarillo. Route 83 goes northwest to Perryton and south to Shamrock.

The city of Canadian covers about 1.3 square miles (3.4 square kilometers) of land. There's no water area within the city limits. Some people say Canadian feels a bit isolated, meaning it's far from bigger cities.

Canadian's Weather

Canadian has a cool semi-arid climate. This means it's usually dry, but it gets just enough rain to almost be considered a humid subtropical climate.
