Cantil is a small community in Kern County, California. Its name comes from Spanish and means "Stone Cliff." You can find Cantil in the Fremont Valley, which is part of the western Mojave Desert. It is not an official city, but rather an unincorporated community.

Where is Cantil Located?
Cantil is located in California, along California State Route 14. It sits between the towns of Mojave and Red Rock Canyon. The community is about 2,018 feet (615 meters) above sea level. It is also about 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Saltdale.

Cantil's History and Development
Cantil began as a train station around 1908 or 1909. It was part of the Nevada and California Railroad line. This line was extended to connect Owens Lake with Mojave. The name "Cantil" was chosen along with other "C" names for stations, like Cambio, Cinco, and Ceneda. The first post office in Cantil opened in 1916.
Honda's Test Track Near Cantil
Cantil is close to the Honda Proving Center of California (HPCC). This is a large test track where Honda tests new cars and motorcycles. Honda closed the facility for a while in 2010. But they decided to renovate and expand it. The HPCC reopened in April 2016 with new test roads.
A Notable Event in 2014
On October 31, 2014, the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise had an accident. It crashed in the Mojave Desert near Cantil. Sadly, one of the two pilots died in this event.
