How Diekirch's Borders Have Changed
Over time, the borders of the Canton of Diekirch have changed a bit. This happens when smaller areas decide to join together or split apart.
For example, in 2006, a commune called Bastendorf (which was part of Diekirch Canton) joined with Fouhren from another canton. They formed a new commune called Tandel. This new commune ended up in the Vianden Canton. This meant Diekirch Canton gave up about 24 square kilometers of land.
Later, in 2012, two communes within Diekirch Canton, Ermsdorf and Medernach, decided to merge. They became one new commune called Vallée de l'Ernz. These changes help make local government more efficient.
