Exploring Capileira and Beyond
Capileira is a special place because it's the highest village that most cars can reach in this part of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Even though a main road goes through the village, you can't drive all the way across the mountains anymore.
Getting Around the National Park
You can drive to a car park where the national park begins. From there, the road is closed to regular traffic. During the summer, the national park runs a special bus service on this closed road. You need to book your spot for this bus in advance at an office in the village.
Nearby Places to Discover
A path from Capileira leads north to an old, abandoned settlement called La Cebadilla. This place was built for workers who created a hydro-electric power plant in the upper Poqueira Gorge.
Life and Tourism in Capileira
Capileira has become a popular spot for visitors. It's a great base for people who love walking and exploring the mountains.
Popular Activities
Many hikers start their climb to Mulhacén from Capileira. Mulhacén is the highest mountain in mainland Spain. People usually plan this as a two-day trip, staying overnight at a mountain refuge.
Connecting to Other Towns
A bus route connects Capileira to the city of Granada. This bus also stops in other towns like Lanjarón and Órgiva. You can also take a bus to Alcútar, passing through Trevélez and Juviles. As of 2011, there were three bus services each day in both directions.
Village Facilities
Capileira offers good services for visitors. You'll find several restaurants, hotels, and apartment buildings. There's also a market on Saturdays where you can buy local goods. Despite the tourism, the village still keeps its traditional Alpujarran look and feel, especially away from the main road.
Population and Education
In 2005, about 582 people lived in Capileira. Most of them were Spanish, but some were from other countries, mainly from the European Union. The village has a primary school for younger children, but there isn't a secondary school.
