The Capital City Club is a special private social club located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was officially started on May 21, 1883. This makes it one of the oldest private clubs in the Southern part of the U.S..

History of the Capital City Club

When the club was first created, its main goal was "to promote the pleasure, kind feeling and general culture of its members." This means they wanted to help members have fun, be friendly, and learn new things. Harry C. Stockdell was the club's very first president.

Early Locations and Growth

The club first met at 43 Walton Street. In August 1884, they moved to a new building at 114 Peachtree Street. Today, the club has three different places for its members to use. The oldest one is the downtown Atlanta club building on John Portman Blvd. It was opened on December 16, 1911.

Golf and Country Club

A golf course was also finished in 1911, designed by Herbert Barker. The Capital City Country Club, located in Brookhaven, was first leased in 1913 and then bought in 1915. At that time, the golf course was made bigger, going from nine holes to eighteen. The current country club building was built in 1928.

In 2002, another club facility was added. This was the Crabapple Golf Club, built on about 600 acres (2.4 km2) in Milton, Georgia. This area is in the northern part of Fulton County.

Famous Visitors

Many important people have visited the Capital City Club over the years. These guests have included several presidents of the United States. Even royalty from other countries have been guests at the club!

Architecture of the Club Buildings

The buildings of the Capital City Club have interesting designs.

Downtown Atlanta Club Design

The downtown Atlanta Capital City Club was designed by an architect named Donn Barber. He was trained in the Beaux-Arts style. This style often looks grand and serious, much like other famous clubs in New York City. The building has a Georgian Revival style, which means it looks like older buildings from the Georgian era. It started as a four-story building, and a fifth floor was added later above its decorative trim.

Country Club Design

The Capital City Country Club, built in 1928, is located in Historic Brookhaven. It was designed by Burge and Stevens. This building looks like a large, old country house. It has tall chimneys and a round stair tower with a cone-shaped roof. Its angled, gabled wings give it an interesting, uneven shape, similar to old French country homes.
