Cara D. Mund was born on December 8, 1993. She is an American lawyer and a former Miss America. Cara is from Bismarck, North Dakota.
In June 2017, she won the title of Miss North Dakota 2017. Later, on September 10, 2017, she was crowned Miss America 2018. This happened in Atlantic City. Cara was the first person from North Dakota to win the Miss America competition.

Early Life and School
Cara Mund was born in Bismarck, North Dakota. Her parents are DeLora Kautzmann-Mund and Doug Mund.
Cara is very good at dancing and creating dance routines. When she was in high school, she trained for four summers with the Radio City Rockettes. In 2019, they even called her one of their "Successful Rockette Women."
Since she was 14, Cara has put on a fashion show every year. This show helps raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. In high school, she was the president of her school's National Honor Society. She was also one of the top students in her class. Her classmates even voted her "most likely to become Miss America." In 2024, Cara was added to her high school’s Hall of Fame.
Cara graduated with honors from Brown University in 2016. She studied business, entrepreneurship, and organizations. Her main project was about the Miss America Organization. She was also the president of the sorority Kappa Delta. Cara has said that Brown University helped her learn to "think on her feet."
In 2019, the North Dakota House of Representatives honored Cara. They passed a special resolution for her. She was also named one of "Five Women Who Changed North Dakota's History." On March 11, 2021, the North Dakota State Museum opened an exhibit about Cara.
Before she became Miss America, Cara planned to go to law school. In May 2022, she graduated from Harvard Law School. She was a teaching assistant there. She also worked on a law journal and was part of the mock trial team. On September 23, 2022, Cara became a licensed lawyer in North Dakota.
Pageant Competitions
Starting in Pageants
Cara started competing in pageants when she was a child. She won titles like Little Miss North Dakota and Miss Pre-Teen North Dakota. Later, she won Miss Red River Valley's Outstanding Teen 2010. This led her to compete in Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2011. She also placed fourth in the Miss North Dakota Teen USA 2012 pageant.
Miss North Dakota
Cara competed in Miss North Dakota 2016. She was Miss Oil Country 2016 and came in second place. The next year, she returned as Miss Northern Lights 2017. She won the title of Miss North Dakota 2017. Her special project was called "A Make-A-Wish Passion with Fashion."
Miss America 2018
Cara represented North Dakota in the Miss America 2018 competition. This event took place in September 2017 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Her project was "A Make-A-Wish Passion with Fashion." During the early rounds, she was recognized for her community service.
On September 10, 2017, Cara Mund was crowned Miss America 2018. Miss America 2017 Savvy Shields crowned her. With the title, Cara received a $50,000 scholarship. She was the first person from North Dakota to win Miss America. She was also the last Miss America to compete in the swimsuit part of the competition.
During her time as Miss America, Cara helped many groups. She was a National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. She also worked closely with the USO, which supports military families. In 2018, she spoke up about women's empowerment. She said that the Miss America organization helps women stand up for themselves.
In August 2018, Cara shared her thoughts about the Miss America Organization. She felt that her ideas were not being heard by the leaders. She said, "To stay silent is to give away my power." She wanted to make sure that women who followed her would not be controlled or silenced.
On December 8, 2019, Cara Mund became the first Miss America to be a judge for the Miss Universe competition.
Politics
From August to December 2016, Cara worked as an intern for U.S. Senator John Hoeven. He is a Republican.
Running for Congress in 2022
On August 6, 2022, Cara Mund announced she would run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. She ran as an independent candidate for North Dakota. She said she decided to run because she wanted to make a difference for people.
The Democratic-NPL candidate, Mark Haugen, later left the race. His party then supported Cara Mund.
Even though some polls showed a close race, Cara lost the election. She ran against the Republican candidate, Kelly Armstrong. He won with 62.2% of the votes, while Cara received 37.6%.
Running for Congress in 2024
On April 8, 2024, Cara Mund announced she would run again for the U.S. House of Representatives. This time, she ran in the NDGOP primary election. She wanted to replace Kelly Armstrong, who was running for governor. Cara campaigned as a Republican who supported women's health choices and was not a supporter of Donald Trump.
She competed against four other candidates. Cara took part in three of the four debates.
On June 11, 2024, Cara Mund lost the primary election. She came in third place among the five candidates, getting 19% of the votes. Cara said she had concerns about misinformation regarding women’s health care.
On September 21, 2024, Cara Mund was voted “Best ND Politician.” She has also said that she might run for office again in the future.
Legal Career
As of 2024, Cara Mund works as a lawyer at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP. She handles complicated business lawsuits. This includes cases about financial issues and employment.
