Cardale Jones (born September 29, 1992) is a former American football quarterback. He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. While there, he helped his team win a major championship. He was later chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 2016 NFL draft. Jones also played for other teams in the National Football League (NFL), the XFL, the Canadian Football League (CFL), and the Indoor Football League (IFL).
Early Life and High School Football
Cardale Jones grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He went to Ginn Academy and played football for Glenville High School. At Glenville, he was coached by Ted Ginn Sr.. In 2009, Jones led his high school team to the championship game. He was also good at basketball and track. Experts thought he was a promising player, and he decided to play college football at Ohio State University in 2011.
College Football Career
Cardale Jones played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2012 to 2015.
2012 Season: Learning and Growing
Jones did not play in games during his first year at Ohio State. This is called "redshirting." During this time, he caused some discussion because of a message he posted online. He later explained that he was frustrated after a tough exam. He said he learned a lot from the experience. Jones worked hard and eventually graduated from Ohio State in May 2017 with a degree in African-American Studies.
2013 Season: Limited Playtime
In 2013, Jones played very little. He only threw one pass and ran for 128 yards. This was his first year playing after redshirting.
2014 Season: Becoming a Champion
The 2014 season was a big one for Cardale Jones. He started as the third-string quarterback. But when the two players ahead of him got hurt, Jones got his chance.
He started his first college game in the Big Ten Championship Game. Jones led Ohio State to a huge 59–0 win. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the game.
After that, Jones helped the Buckeyes win two more important games. They beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Then, they won the College Football National Championship game against Oregon. Jones played very well in the championship, helping his team win 42–20. He threw for 242 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for a touchdown.
Even after winning the national championship, Jones decided to stay at Ohio State. He felt he needed more experience before trying to play professionally.
2015 Season: Starting Quarterback
In 2015, Jones started the season as Ohio State's main quarterback. He played well in some games, setting new personal records for passing yards. However, after starting seven games, another player took over as the main quarterback. After the season, Jones decided to enter the 2016 NFL draft.

Professional Football Career
Cardale Jones was chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was the 139th player picked overall.
Buffalo Bills (2016)
Jones signed a contract with the Bills in June 2016. He was the third-string quarterback for most of the season. In the last game of the 2016 season, he played in the fourth quarter. He completed 6 of 11 passes for 96 yards.
Los Angeles Chargers (2017–2019)
In July 2017, Jones was traded to the Los Angeles Chargers. He was with the Chargers for a few seasons. He was released by the team in August 2019.
Seattle Seahawks (2019)
Jones briefly joined the Seattle Seahawks practice squad in September 2019. He was released later that month.
DC Defenders (2020)
In 2019, Jones joined the DC Defenders of the XFL. He became their starting quarterback. In his first XFL start, he threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing, helping them win their first game. In Week 2, he led the Defenders to a 27–0 shutout victory. The league stopped operations in April 2020, ending his time with the team.
Later Teams (2022–2023)
Jones later signed with the Edmonton Elks in the Canadian Football League (CFL) in May 2022, but was released shortly after. In December 2022, he signed with the Massachusetts Pirates in the Indoor Football League (IFL). He was released by the Pirates in August 2023.
