The nearlyblack sedge (scientific name: Carex subnigricans) is a type of plant. It belongs to a group of grass-like plants called sedges.

Where It Lives

This sedge plant naturally grows in the western United States. You can find it from California all the way to Wyoming. It likes to grow in mountains, both in damp and dry areas.

It lives at very high elevations, usually above 2,500 meters (about 8,200 feet). This means it grows in places like the high Sierra Nevada mountains. These areas are often called sub-alpine or alpine zones, which are cold, high-up places.

What It Looks Like

The nearlyblack sedge has stems that grow up to about 20 centimeters (8 inches) tall. These stems grow from a network of thin underground stems called rhizomes. Rhizomes help the plant spread and find water.

Its thin leaves are tightly rolled up. They look a bit like small quills, which are old-fashioned pens. The plant's flower cluster, called an inflorescence, is usually oval-shaped with a pointed tip. It is only about one or two centimeters long.
