Carle Place is a small community in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York. It is known as a "hamlet" and a "census-designated place" (CDP). In 2020, about 5,000 people lived here. Historically, it was also called Frog Hollow or Mineola Park.

History of Carle Place

How Carle Place Started

In 1946, a builder named William J. Levitt bought land near the Carle Place train station. He wanted to try building many low-cost homes very quickly. His teams brought pre-cut wood and built 600 houses fast. These homes offered affordable living in the suburbs. They were also easy to commute from to jobs in New York City.

Within five years, many soldiers returning from war and their families moved in. This made the population grow by 500 percent! This project changed Carle Place a lot. It also became the model for Levittown, a much bigger community Levitt started nearby the next year.

The Name Carle Place

The community is named after Silas Carle. More specifically, it's named after a large 32-room house he built in Westbury in the 1800s. People often called this house the "Carle Place." The area around it later took on the same name.

Other Historic Names

Between 1895 and 1915, the area was also known as Mineola Park. This name came from a real estate project that didn't do very well. In 1915, the name went back to Carle Place. There was one more try to change the name in 1951. This happened after Levitt & Sons bought and built on much of the old Mineola Park area. But most residents wanted to keep the name Carle Place, so the idea failed. No one has tried to change the name since then.

Another old name for the area is Frog Hollow. People still use this name sometimes. It's also where the Carle Place Union Free School District gets its mascot, which is a frog!
