Carlisle is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is located northwest of Boston. In 2020, about 5,237 people lived there.

History of Carlisle

English settlers first came to the area that is now Carlisle in 1651. This land was originally part of nearby towns like Acton, Billerica, Chelmsford, and Concord. Carlisle became its own district of Concord in 1780. Later, in 1805, it officially became an independent town.

Fun Things to Do in Carlisle

Carlisle has many places for residents and visitors. You can find a library, a country store, and a bookstore. The town also has a school called Carlisle Public School.

Ice Cream and Farms

If you love ice cream, Carlisle has two great spots!

  • One is a branch of Kimball Farms.
  • The other is at Great Brook Farm State Park. This farm is special because it has the first robotic milking system in Massachusetts! They even make ice cream from the farm's milk. Great Brook Farm is also a popular place for cross-country skiing in New England during winter.

Music and Media

On the east side of town, there used to be the Blue Jay Recording Studio. Many famous artists recorded music there, including Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.

The town has its own newspaper called the Carlisle Mosquito. It has been published every week since 1972. It's a free newspaper for everyone in town and shares local news and announcements.

Library and Culture

The Gleason Public Library is part of a group of libraries called the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium. It even has a special machine called a seismograph that can detect earthquakes!

Carlisle also has groups for music lovers, like the Carlisle Chamber Orchestra and the Carlisle Community Chorus. There's also the Savoyard Light Opera Company.

Carlisle Old Home Day

For over 100 years, Carlisle has celebrated Old Home Day. This free event happens every year on the weekend before the Fourth of July. It's a fun day for families with lots of games and activities.

Carlisle is located about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Lowell and 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Boston. It shares borders with several other towns, including Concord, Acton, Westford, Chelmsford, Billerica, and Bedford.

The town covers a total area of about 15.5 square miles (40.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

A large part of Carlisle, about a quarter of its area, is made up of conservation land. This means it's protected natural space. This includes land managed by the town, the Carlisle Conservation Foundation, Great Brook Farm State Park, and a section of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge near the Concord River.
