Carn Fadryn is a cool mountain in Wales, located on the Llŷn Peninsula. It's also known as Carn Fadrun or Garn Fadryn. This mountain is famous for its ancient hillfort, which was built a very long time ago during the Iron Age. The fort covers about five hectares of land! From the top, you can see the village of Garnfadryn below.

Carn Fadryn isn't just a mountain; it's a place with a long history. People built forts here many centuries ago. These forts helped protect the people who lived in the area.

Ancient Fortifications

Archaeologists believe the hillfort on Carn Fadryn was built in different stages. The first fort was created around 300 BC. This early fort covered the very top of the mountain. It protected an area about the size of 12 acres (49,000 square meters).

Later, around 100 BC, the fort was made even stronger. People built more walls and defenses. This second fort was much bigger, covering about 26 acres (105,000 square meters). It stretched further down the northern side of the mountain.

A Medieval Castle

After the Iron Age, people continued to use Carn Fadryn for defense. A third fort was built much later, during the Middle Ages. This fort was like a small castle. It was built right on the natural rocky peak near the summit.

Historians think this medieval fort was "the castle of the sons of Owain." This castle was mentioned in old writings from 1188. It was described as a newly built stone fort.

Amazing Views

If you climb to the top of Carn Fadryn on a clear day, you'll see incredible views! You can look out over Anglesey and the mountains of Snowdonia. You'll also see most of Cardigan Bay. On very clear days, you might even spot the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland across the sea!
