Caroline Lawrence (born in 1954) is a famous English-American author. She is best known for her exciting book series called The Roman Mysteries. These books are historical novels written for children.

The series is about a Roman girl named Flavia and her three close friends. Her friends are Nubia, who was a freed slave girl; Jonathan, a Jewish boy; and Lupus, a beggar boy who cannot speak. The books are set in Ancient Rome and have won many awards. They have been published in many different languages all over the world. In 2010, Caroline Lawrence was asked to write another mystery series. This new series, called The Western Mysteries, is set in Virginia City, Nevada Territory in the early 1860s.

About Caroline Lawrence

Caroline Lawrence was born in London, England. Her parents were American, and they moved back to the United States shortly after she was born. She grew up in Bakersfield, California with her younger brother and sister. Her father taught English and drama at a local high school. Her mother was an artist.

When Caroline was twelve, her family moved to Stanford University in northern California. This was so her father could study Linguistics, which is the study of language. Later, Caroline studied Classics at Berkeley. Classics is the study of ancient Greek and Roman culture, languages, and history. She won a special scholarship called a Marshall Scholarship to study at Cambridge University in England. There, at Newnham College, she studied Classical Art and Archaeology. Archaeology is the study of human history through digging up old sites and objects.

After finishing her studies at Cambridge, Caroline stayed in England. She later earned another degree in Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College London. She then taught Latin, French, and art at a small London primary school.

In 2000, she wrote The Thieves of Ostia. This was the first book in her popular children's adventure series set in Ancient Rome. The book was published in 2001. The Roman Mysteries books combine Caroline's love for art history, ancient languages, and travel. She also enjoys cinema, jazz music, and exploring London. Caroline lives by the Thames River in London with her husband, Richard, who is a graphic designer. In 2009, Caroline won the Classical Association Prize. This award recognized her important work in helping people understand Classics.

Caroline Lawrence has also worked on an educational website for the University of Reading called Romans Revealed. For this website, she created stories about Roman Britain. These stories were based on real objects and discoveries found by archaeologists.

In 2013, she was chosen to be the President of JACT. JACT stands for The Joint Association of Classical Teachers. She followed in the footsteps of famous people like Boris Johnson and Bettany Hughes.
