What is Carrollton's History?

Carrollton was first planned out in 1792. It was first known as Port William. It was the main town for Gallatin County until 1838. That year, the county was split, and Carroll County was created.

Port William was then renamed Carrollton. It was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton. He was a person who signed the Declaration of Independence. Carrollton became the main town for the new Carroll County.

The town's first newspaper, the Carrollton Eagle, started in 1848. During the Civil War in 1863, some Confederate soldiers robbed a bank. Union soldiers then followed them. The Confederates also took a sword from a famous resident, William Orlando Butler. He later got his sword back.

In 1868, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad was built near town. This railroad became more important than river travel for the town's economy. It helped increase farming, especially for tobacco.

Carrollton had a very bad flood in 1937. This was the Ohio River flood of 1937. The floodwaters reached a high level of 79.9 feet (24.3 m).

Carrollton has one of the biggest tobacco markets in Kentucky. The number of people living in the city has stayed about the same since 1970. In 1988, a very sad event happened. The Carrollton bus disaster was one of the worst bus accidents in U.S. history.
