History of Carthage
The area where Carthage now stands was first settled around 1798. It was originally known as "Long Falls."
Carthage officially became a village in 1869. It is one of only twelve villages in New York that still operates under its original special rules, called a charter. Most other villages have changed to a more common state law. The village was named after the famous ancient city of Carthage in what is now Tunisia.
Over the years, Carthage has faced several large fires. In 1861, a big fire destroyed about twenty buildings. Another fire in 1884 was even larger. It spread across the Black River from West Carthage and ruined more than 150 buildings. In 2002, another fire hit the downtown area. This fire destroyed eight buildings and caused nearly 150 people to lose their homes.
Despite these challenges, some historic buildings in Carthage are still standing. The First Baptist Church and Cook Memorial Building, the State Street Historic District, and the United States Post Office are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites.

It also goes northeast about 20 miles (32 km) to Harrisville. NY-126 goes west about 16 miles (26 km) to Watertown by a more direct route. It also goes southeast about 14 miles (23 km) to Croghan.
Media Connections
Champion Hill is a place located between Carthage and Watertown. It is important because many local TV stations in Watertown started there. The original studios for WWNY-TV were there from 1954 to 1970. Later, WPBS-TV (then called WNPE) also used the facilities from 1971 to 1977. Even though WWNY's studios are now in downtown Watertown, Carthage is still officially listed as its "city of license."
