History of Caslano
The very center of Caslano was once a Roman era fort. Even though the fort is gone, old stories and the way the town is built suggest it was once a walled area. A small village nearby, called Torrazza, was once a place of big fights between the Swiss and the Duchy of Milan (an old Italian state). In 1604, a special agreement called the Treaty of Varese finally gave Torrazza to Caslano.
The main church in Caslano was built in 1653. It was built around an even older church that was already there.
Long ago, before big factories, people in Caslano made a living from fishing, mining, and making things like lime and clay in special ovens called kilns. They also moved goods by boat and farmed the land. Many people also sent money home from other countries where they worked. After World War II, these old jobs became less important. Fishing and farming decreased, and the mines and kilns closed.
Instead, new jobs grew, especially in tourism. Hotels, restaurants, and vacation homes became popular. Industries and shops also grew, bringing many people to work in Caslano. The town started building more homes and became a popular place for tourists.
