History of Neggio
Neggio was first mentioned way back in the year 807, known then as Nego. Later, in 1335, it was called Negio. We know people lived here a very long time ago because tombs from the 3rd and 4th centuries have been found. These tombs suggest there was a Roman settlement near where the village is today.
In the 1400s, Neggio was known as a separate Vicinanza, which was a local community or neighborhood. In 1611, it became independent from the main church area of Agno.
Since 1938, a small group of Dominican nuns has lived in Neggio. During World War II, in January 1944, they provided shelter to Edda Ciano, who was the daughter of Benito Mussolini, along with her children.
Churches and Buildings
The local church, called S. Maria dell'Annunciata, has old frescoes (wall paintings) from the 1300s. These paintings were part of an even older church that was taken down in 1620. There used to be another church, San Giorgio, but nothing is left of it today. However, a small chapel was built on the same hill in the 1700s.
Work and Life in Neggio
