A Glimpse into Castambul's History

Castambul was not always called Castambul. It was first known as Sixth Creek. A man named Price Maurice later renamed it Castambul. He chose this name after the Kastamonu region in Turkey, which used to be called Kastambul.

Australia's First Gold Mine

In the 1850s, something very exciting happened here. Australia's first gold mine that made a profit, called the Victoria mine, was found in this area. Imagine finding gold!

Angora Goats and Price Maurice

Castambul was also home to Price Maurice. He moved there in 1856. He started breeding Angora goats for their soft wool. These special goats were brought to South Australia from Turkey by John Haigh.

Price Maurice bought Haigh's goats. He was very impressed with them. He even sent to Turkey for more animals to add to his flock. His business in South Australia was very successful. However, he returned to Britain with his family in 1862 for health reasons.

The Old Post Office

The Kastambul Post Office opened a long time ago. It helped people send letters and packages. It closed its doors at the end of 1971. Today, not much is left of the old settlement.

Kangaroo Creek Reservoir

In 1966, work began on the Kangaroo Creek Reservoir. This is a large dam on the River Torrens. It was finished in 1969. Building it cost about $5.3 million. The reservoir helps supply water to eastern Adelaide. It also helps prevent floods. It can hold a huge amount of water, about 19,160 megalitres!
