Paracombe is a small town located close to Adelaide, which is the capital city of South Australia. In 2011, about 343 people lived in Paracombe.

Where is Paracombe?

Paracombe is found south of Inglewood. You can reach it by taking Gorge Road from Athelstone, which is a suburb of Adelaide.

Paracombe's Past

The name Paracombe likely comes from the Little Para River. The headwaters, or starting point, of this river are in the area. The town was first settled in 1840–41. Two people named John Barton Hack and John Richardson were the first settlers.

For many years, Paracombe was a sheep station. This means it was a large farm where sheep were raised. This continued until the early 1900s. After that, the land was divided into smaller pieces. More people moved to the area to live on these smaller plots.

As more people arrived, important buildings were constructed. These included a school, a post office, a church, and a recreation hall. However, the town did not grow much bigger than this.

Kangaroo Creek Reservoir

In 1966, construction began on the Kangaroo Creek Reservoir. This is a large dam built on the River Torrens. The dam was finished in 1969 and cost about $5.3 million to build.

The Kangaroo Creek Reservoir has two main purposes. First, it supplies drinking water to the eastern parts of Adelaide. Second, it helps protect the area from floods. The reservoir can hold a huge amount of water, about 19,160 megalitres.

What's in Paracombe?

Paracombe has a few important facilities for its residents. There is a primary school where younger students can learn. The town also has a recreation centre for community activities. In addition, there is a Country Fire Station to help keep everyone safe.

Getting Around

Paracombe is not part of the Adelaide Metro public transport system. This means there are no regular buses or trains from Adelaide Metro that go to Paracombe. However, a coach service is available. This coach is run by LinkSA. It travels from Tea Tree Plaza Interchange to towns like Gumeracha and Mount Pleasant.
