Cudlee Creek is a small, quiet town located near Adelaide in South Australia. It's part of the Adelaide Hills Council area, known for its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

History of Cudlee Creek

The name Cudlee Creek likely comes from the Kaurna language, which is spoken by the Aboriginal people of the Adelaide Plains. The word kadli means Dingo Creek.

The first European settlers arrived in Cudlee Creek in 1838. William Kelly, from the Isle of Man, started a farm called Sulby Glen. This farm became famous for making cheese. Farmers also grew a lot of wheat, fruit, and potatoes there.

Cudlee Creek grew into an important place for exporting apples and pears. In 1922, a large cold storage building was built for a group of fruit growers who worked together. This building is still a very noticeable part of the town today.

In 2019, a large bushfire affected parts of Cudlee Creek and the surrounding areas.

Here are some interesting places in Cudlee Creek:

  • Gorge Wildlife Park: This is one of Australia's largest privately owned animal parks. It first opened its doors in 1965.
  • Cudlee Cafe: This building used to be an old ice cream shop that opened in 1890. Now, it's a popular restaurant.
  • Heysen Trail: This famous walking trail, which covers a long distance, goes right through the town.

The local primary school, Millbrook Primary School, closed in 2010 after being open for 131 years. When it closed, only 15 students were attending.

The Cudlee Creek Conservation Park is located near the River Torrens. It's a special place for nature, home to many different birds and marsupials (like kangaroos and wallabies). These animals live among the tall stringybark, red gum, blue gum, and manna gum trees. The park was created in 1971, but it doesn't have any special visitor facilities.

If you love biking, check out the Fox Creek mountain bike trails. They are in the Mount Crawford forest, just south of the town. You can find downhill tracks that are 2 to 3 kilometers long, plus an 8-kilometer cross-country track.
