Castle Ring is an ancient Iron Age hill fort located high up on the southern edge of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, England. It's the highest point on Cannock Chase, standing at 242 metres (794 feet) above sea level.
You can find Castle Ring near the village of Cannock Wood. It's south of Rugeley and north of Burntwood. The famous Heart of England Way walking path is right next to it. From Castle Ring, you get amazing views over Cannock Chase, the Trent Valley, and much of Staffordshire.
A Look Back in Time
Castle Ring is thought to have been first used around the year 50 CE. It was likely home to an ancient British (Celtic) tribe called the Cornovii. These people lived in Britain long before the Romans arrived.
Today, you can still see the remains of the earthworks that formed the outer walls of the fort. These were like big ditches and banks built for protection. Some parts of the ground inside the ring look like they were ploughed. People aren't sure if this happened when the Cornovii lived there or much later, in the Middle Ages.
During the medieval period, a hunting lodge was also built inside the ring. A hunting lodge was a building used by nobles when they went hunting. You can still see the remains of this old lodge today.
