History of Cataño

How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.

After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This agreement was part of a document called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This means it is connected to the U.S. but is not a state.

Early Population Counts

In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Cataño and a nearby barrio called Mabú had a combined population of 1,179 people. It's interesting to see how much the population has grown since then!
