The National Shrine Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a very important church in Dallas, Texas. It is often called Cathedral Guadalupe for short. This church is the main cathedral for the Catholic Diocese of Dallas. A cathedral is the main church for a bishop.

This beautiful building was finished in the early 1900s. You can find it in the Arts District of downtown Dallas. It is one of the largest Catholic churches in the United States. About 11,200 people attend services there every Sunday.

History of the Cathedral

How the Church Started

Inside the Cathedral

In 1869, the first Catholic church in Dallas was created. It was called Sacred Heart Church. This church was built in 1872. It was located near where the St. Paul train station is today.

In 1890, Dallas became a "diocese." A diocese is an area that a bishop leads. Sacred Heart Church then became the main church, or cathedral, for this new diocese. As Dallas grew, the church became too small. People needed a bigger cathedral.

In 2023, the church was given a special title. It became a "National Shrine." This means it is a very important place for people to visit and pray. Many Catholics from Mexico and Latin America especially visit this shrine.

Building the New Cathedral

The land for the current cathedral cost about US$30,000. That would be like over $745,000 today! The first stone for the new cathedral was placed on June 17, 1898. The church was officially opened on October 26, 1902.

Two Churches Become One

As the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex grew, new churches were built. This meant fewer people went to Sacred Heart Church. But another church nearby, Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, was getting too crowded.

This church, started in 1914, mostly served Mexican families who had moved to the area. In 1975, the two churches decided to join together. Sacred Heart Cathedral was renamed Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe. This new name means "the Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe."

This change showed that many people in the church spoke Spanish. Now, the church has services and programs in both Spanish and English. They even offer English classes.

Adding to the Cathedral

The cathedral has recently been updated. A big part of this project was building a bell tower. This tower cost $20 million. It holds 49 bells that can play music. The original architect, Nicholas J. Clayton, had planned this tower. But it was not built until recently.
