Cecilia Elena Rouse (born December 18, 1963) is an American economist. An economist studies how people and societies make choices about money and resources. She is currently the President of the Brookings Institution, a famous research group.
Before this, she was the 30th Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers from 2021 to 2023. This is a group that gives economic advice to the President of the United States. She was the first Black American to hold this important job. She also used to be a dean at Princeton University.
Early Life and Education
Cecilia Rouse grew up in Del Mar, California. She finished high school in 1981. She has two siblings. Her brother, Forest Rouse, is a physicist. Her sister, Carolyn Rouse, is an anthropologist and also a professor at Princeton University.
Her father, Carl A. Rouse, was a research physicist. Her mother, Lorraine, worked as a school psychologist.
Cecilia Rouse went to Harvard University. She earned her first degree in economics in 1986. She then got her PhD in economics from Harvard in 1992.
Her Career Journey
After finishing her studies, Rouse started teaching at Princeton University in 1992.
She worked for President Bill Clinton in the United States National Economic Council from 1998 to 1999. This council helps the President with economic decisions.
Later, she was a member of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers. She served in this role from 2009 to 2011.
Rouse has also been the dean of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. She is a professor who studies the economics of education. This means she looks at how money and resources affect schools and learning. She has also been involved with important research groups.
Working with President Biden
President Joe Biden chose Cecilia Rouse to lead the Council of Economic Advisers. The Senate, which is part of the U.S. government, had meetings about her nomination.
On March 2, 2021, the Senate voted to confirm her. Most senators, 95 out of 99, voted for her. This showed strong support for her new role.
In November 2022, it was announced that Rouse would leave her position. She left on March 31, 2023, to go back to teaching. Jared Bernstein was chosen to take her place.
In June 2023, she became the 9th President of the Brookings Institution. This is a big step in her career.
