Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This war ended with a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898 in 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a special area that belongs to the U.S. but isn't a state.
Counting the People: Census Data
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that the total number of people living in Cedro, along with two other nearby areas called Vegas and Farallón, was 1,043.
