Vegas is a special area, called a barrio, located in the town of Cayey, Puerto Rico. It's like a neighborhood or a small district within the larger municipality. In 2010, about 4,083 people called Vegas home. It is part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
A Look Back: The History of Vegas
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.

In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that the total number of people living in Vegas, along with two other nearby barrios called Cedro and Farallón, was 1,043.
