Early Life and Activism
Celso Emilio Ferreiro was born in a town called Celanova. His family was quite well-off and believed strongly in Galician culture.
When he was 20, in 1932, he helped start a group called Mocedades Galeguistas de Celanova. This means "Galicianist Youths of Celanova". Two years later, he also helped create the Federación de Mocedades Galeguistas. These groups worked to promote Galician language and traditions.
Celso Emilio sometimes faced difficulties because of his writings. For example, an article he published in his magazine Guieiro caused some problems.
Life During Franco's Rule
During the time of Franco's rule in Spain, Celso Emilio Ferreiro was called to serve in the Spanish Civil War. He was part of the Nationalist side.
After the war, he studied law. He also wrote for many different magazines and newspapers. This was during a period when the Galician language and culture faced challenges.
In 1966, Celso Emilio traveled to Venezuela. There, he worked with a group called the Galician Brotherhood. This group helped Galicians living abroad stay connected to their homeland. He later had some disagreements with other Galician groups in Venezuela. Because of this, he wrote a poetry book called Viaxe ao pais dos ananos, which means "Journey to the land of the dwarves". He also helped start the Patronato da Cultura Galega, which supported Galician culture. He even worked with Rafael Caldera, who was the President of Venezuela.
Later Years and Important Works
After living in Venezuela, Celso Emilio Ferreiro returned to Spain. He settled in Madrid and continued his work as a journalist. He wrote in both Galician and Spanish.
However, his most famous and important works are his poems written in Galician. One of his best-known poems is "Longa noite de pedra". This title means "Long night of stone". It is a sad but powerful poem that talks about the difficult times for Galician culture during Franco's rule. It is considered one of the most important Galician poems ever written.
Death and Legacy
Celso Emilio Ferreiro passed away in 1979 in Vigo, Galicia.
His contributions to Galician literature and culture are still remembered. In 1989, the Día das Letras Galegas (Galician Literature Day) was dedicated to him. This special day celebrates important Galician writers and their works.
