History of Center Point
Center Point began as a small farming community. It was founded by the Reed family from North Carolina. Other families settled nearby towns like Trussville, Springville, Clay, and Pinson around the same time.
By 1924, an important building called the Rock School was built. Today, this building serves as the Center Point City Hall. The community also had businesses like a post office and a blacksmith shop. For many years, from the 1920s to the 1950s, Center Point remained a small, unincorporated community.
A big change happened in 1947 when a good water supply was found. This helped Center Point become more independent and ready for growth. In the 1950s, more people started moving to the area. They came from the center of Birmingham, causing nearby neighborhoods to grow.
The 1960s brought rapid development to Center Point. More than 80% of all homes in the city were built between 1960 and 1970. This fast growth meant that Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, which served Center Point, became too crowded. To help with this, Jefferson County Schools opened a new high school, E.B. Erwin High School, in 1965.
By 1967, Center Point was recognized as the largest census-designated place (CDP) in the United States. It had over 67,000 people! From the 1970s to the mid-1990s, Center Point was a busy and growing suburb of Birmingham. It was one of the largest communities around the city.
However, by the late 1990s, some challenges began to affect the area. Changes in nearby Birmingham neighborhoods started to impact Center Point. The city of Birmingham was expanding its airport, which led to some homes being cleared. This, along with other changes, caused a shift in the community. To take control of their own future, the people of Center Point decided to officially become a city in 2002.
On January 23, 2012, an intense EF3 tornado hit the city. It destroyed the Center Point Elementary School buildings and many other structures. The community worked hard to rebuild after this event.
