Centerport is a small community called a hamlet in Suffolk County, New York. It is located on the North Shore of Long Island. This area is sometimes called the "Gold Coast" because many wealthy families built large homes there.
Long ago, around 1700, Centerport was known as Little Cow Harbor. It got its current name, Centerport, in 1836. The name "Centerport" refers to its location. It is midway between the east and west sides of the town of Huntington.
In 2010, about 5,508 people lived in Centerport. The area is known for its beautiful homes and beachfront hills. Many people enjoy boating and sailing here. The Centerport Yacht Club, started in 1947, is a popular spot for these activities. They hold many races and events each year.
One of the oldest houses in Centerport is Suydam House, built in 1730. It is a special type of house called a saltbox house.

Camp Alvernia in Centerport has a long history. It was the first Catholic summer camp in the United States, opening in 1888. Today, Camp Alvernia is still open. It welcomes over 900 children aged 3 to 14 every summer.
