Champion is a small town located in Jefferson County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 4,494 people lived there. The town gets its name from General Henry Champion, who was an early owner of the land.
Champion is found on the eastern side of Jefferson County. It is also east of the city of Watertown.

History of Champion
People started settling in the Champion area around 1798. Henry Champion bought the land and sent his surveyor, Noadiah Hubbard, to explore it. Hubbard liked the area so much that he decided to live there. His original home is still standing today.
A famous person, George E. Spencer (1836-1893), was born in Champion. He became a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. Later, he served as a U.S. senator for the state of Alabama.
The town of Champion was officially created in 1800. It was formed from a part of the town of Mexico. This happened even before Jefferson County was officially made. The town was named after Henry Champion, who then gave a bell to the town's church as a gift.
In 1803, a part of Champion was used to create the town of Harrisburg. Early settlers in Champion hoped their town would become the main center for the county. However, this did not happen.
The community of West Carthage became an official village in 1889. The Hiram Hubbard House, an important historical building, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
Geography of Champion
Champion covers a total area of about 116.7 square kilometers (45 square miles). Most of this area, about 114.4 square kilometers (44.13 square miles), is land. The rest, about 2.3 square kilometers (0.87 square miles), is water.
The Black River flows along the northern edge of the town. The southeastern border of Champion is also the border for Lewis County.
Several important roads run through Champion. New York State Route 126 is a highway that goes from east to west. Another major highway, New York State Route 3, also goes east to west in the northern part of Champion. It crosses with New York State Route 26, which runs north to south, in a place called Great Bend.
