Charles Amadeus of Savoy (born April 12, 1624 – died July 30, 1652) was a French nobleman and military leader. He held the title of Duke of Nemours. He is especially known as the father of two important women in European history: Marie Jeanne, who became the Duchess of Savoy, and Marie Françoise, who became the Queen of Portugal.
Who Was Charles Amadeus?
Charles Amadeus was born in Paris, France. His father was Henri of Savoy, 3rd Duke of Nemours, and his mother was Anne of Lorraine. He had an older brother named Louis of Savoy, who passed away in 1641.
A Military Leader
Charles Amadeus was a brave soldier. In 1645, he served in the Army of Flanders, which was a part of the Spanish army. The next year, in 1646, he led the light cavalry during the siege of Kortrijk. A siege is when an army surrounds a city to try and capture it.
Later, in 1652, Charles Amadeus joined the war of the Fronde. This was a series of civil wars in France between 1648 and 1653. He fought in important battles at Bleneau and near the Faubourg St Antoine in Paris, where he was injured.
His Marriage and Children
On July 11, 1643, Charles Amadeus married Élisabeth de Bourbon at the Louvre palace. Élisabeth was known as Mademoiselle de Vendôme. Her father was César, Duke of Vendôme, who was a son of King Henry IV of France. Her mother was a very wealthy heiress named Françoise de Lorraine.
Charles Amadeus and Élisabeth had several children, but only two daughters survived to adulthood:
- Marie Jeanne Baptiste of Savoy (1644–1724): She married Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy in 1665. They had children together.
- Marie Françoise Élisabeth of Savoy (1646–1683): She married King Alphonso VI of Portugal in 1666. Later, she married Alphonso's younger brother, Pedro, Duke of Beja, who was the regent of Portugal. She also had children.
His Final Years
Sadly, Charles Amadeus died in 1652. He was killed in a duel by his brother-in-law, François de Bourbon, Duke of Beaufort. A duel was a formal fight, usually with swords or pistols, to settle a dispute.
Charles Amadeus was buried in the Notre Dame d'Annecy church in Annecy, France. After his death, his brother Henri, who had been an archbishop, left his religious duties to become the next Duke of Nemours.
